Highlights included: Nigerian Tobi Amusan was stunned when she broke the world record in the 100m hurdles semifinals in 12.12 – she ran even faster in the final (although, it was a wind-aided time) to take home the gold medal; Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen proved that “hot weather is just happy weather” by winning the 5000m (even swinging to an outer lane to grab water during the race) – U.S. Grant Fisher held his own until he was tripped up with about 100m to go, and he ultimately finished in 6th; Reigning Olympic champion Athing Mu had to work for her gold medal in the 800m against Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson who took silver; After two grueling days of the decathlon, U.S. Zachery Ziemek won the bronze; Team USA won the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay; Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis set a new world record height of 6.21m in the men’s pole vault in the final event of the championships (and, he exuberantly celebrated with a forward front flip on the track); Team USA dominated in the team competition with 33 medals (13 gold, 9 silver, 11 bronze); and the baton was passed from the U.S. to Budapest, Hungary for the 2023 World Athletics Championships next August.
